The evil eye (al-'ayn) is harm that comes from envious or admiring looks. It is real and well documented in the Qur'an and Sunnah.
The reality of the evil eye
The Prophet, peace be upon him, confirmed that the evil eye is real and advised seeking refuge in Allah from it. It can affect people, property and even livestock, and it often strikes those whom others envy — health, wealth, children and beauty.
Signs
- Sudden decline in health, energy or mood without medical explanation.
- Lethargy, yawning and heaviness, especially during recitation.
- Recurrent minor misfortunes around a specific person or family.
Protection
- Morning and evening adhkar, especially Ayat al-Kursi and the three quls.
- Saying 'Masha'Allah' and making dua for blessing when admiring something.
- Concealing blessings — not displaying wealth or achievements boastfully.
- Trusting in Allah alone; amulets and talismans are forbidden.
Treatment
Ruqyah for the evil eye, washing with the water used by the one who cast the eye when known, and consistent adhkar are the sunnah-based treatments. Most cases respond quickly with Allah's permission.
