My sister is suffering from schizophrenia that does not respond to treatment; she lost her mind more than twenty years ago. She takes medicine which, if she stops taking it, her condition gets worse. My family thought that perhaps what happened to her was because of the evil eye or witchcraft, so they took her to a number of shaykhs and reciters, and they said that there is no treatment for her condition, and what happened to her was because of the evil eye. Praise be to Allah in all circumstances. Now my brother brought one of the reciters who charge a fee for reciting (over the sick person) to the house, to recite over her, and this reciter told him that my sister must stop the psychiatric treatment, and that she will be healed by recitation and will go back to the way she was. My sister’s condition has got worse since she stopped taking her medicine, but my brother is convinced by what this reciter said. I hope that you can give an Islamic response to this matter.

Shar‘i ruqyah is permissible if a non-Muslim does it for a Muslim, and he may be healed by it. There is someone who did ruqyah for poison that reaches the blood, without pumping the stomach, or any change, or any blood transfusion, and he was healed completely. The same happens in cases of witchcraft, jinn possession, epilepsy and the evil eye – these problems may be resolved completely through ruqyah. But a Muslim may do ruqyah and the sickness continues for a long time, or the person thinks that he will never recover. What is the measure by which it may be determined that the ruqyah has started to work straight away or is delayed, and what kind of sicknesses can ruqyah be used to treat them? How can we determine the quality of ruqyah?

My mother used to take a woman who recites Quran to my grandmother’s home so that she recites on our grandmother. As my grandmother is old, disabled, and reached the stage of senility although she is not very old. This woman recites Quran on my grandmother and sometimes on my mother. One time while she was reciting she held my mother’s head so my mother started screaming. I did not see this but my mother told me. Now my mother goes regularly to this woman and she takes my sister and me with her. When she recites on my mother, my mother raises her hands like if she wants to hit someone, her nails come out and she starts saying threatening statements and slanders the Quran. This woman told us that she is possessed by a devil, and that our mother is under spell. She also told us that the devil wants her to become disabled like my grandmother and lose her mind as well. She advised us to read surat al-baqarah everyday and to recite Quran always at home. She also gave us olive oil, jujube, honey, black seeds and pressed dates, and advised us to use them always. She also advised us to spread water with salt and rose water at home alternatively on daily basis. The question: Is it permissible for us to use those things she gave us? Is what we do considered shirk?.

In my mosque, they always recite Ruqyah for the sick; no week goes by without the mosque announcing a request for volunteers to recite Ruqyah for someone. Usually they form a circle around the person and recite Quran, either by sharing out the ajza’ (parts) of the Quran, or one person recites some soorahs of the Quran, whilst the others repeat after him. Sometimes they recite Quran for blessing after divorce, graduation from school or a number of other things that I have seen myself. Or they pass out books of supplications (du‘a’s) and verses to be recited during this gathering, but they do not provide any evidence for what they are doing. Sometimes in these circles there is mixing with women. I also attended a gathering in which they recited the basmalah (the phrase Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem (in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) over some water, then they began to sprinkle it on the members of a family. Can you tell me whether these practices are permissible or innovated? I have stopped attending these gatherings altogether. Is there any book on the fiqh of Ruqyah and Ta‘weedh (seeking refuge with Allah from the Shaytan)? Can we use Ruqyah for trivial things such as divorce and graduation?

I am a young Muslim man who is among those who call people to the way of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah. Three years ago I started to recite ruqyahs that are prescribed in sharee’ah for people, according to proper guidelines but not in any organized fashion, in return for money which I use on some of my needs. Allaah decreed that my ruqyahs be accepted and Allaah has healed many people at my hands and guided others to the right path and helped them to believe in His Oneness and to keep away from shirk, despite the hassles that I have faced from some of the charlatans, biased people and those who seek to prevent shar’i ruqyah which they describe as bid’ah and haraam earnings. Too many people started coming to me and urging to help them because there are no people who devote their time to reciting ruqyah. All of these people are coming to me for ruqyah in my home which is very humble, which causes me a lot of hardship and difficulty, and it bothers my family because people knock at the door so much, and I have started to neglect my other duties because of reciting ruqyah for them because I feel too shy to refuse. I thought of renting a place which I can use specifically for reciting ruqyah as prescribed in sharee’ah and cupping in return for approximately 20 riyals for doing ruqyah for one person, and that charge will go towards paying the rent and some of my essential needs. But I was surprised when some Muslims who claim to have knowledge denounced me for specializing in this and said that specializing in this was a bid’ah and was not known among the salaf of this ummah, and that money earned in this way is haraam. It is permissible to open a clinic for ruqyahs that are prescribed in sharee’ah and cupping in return for money, especially since I am in need and am not well off, and I have responsibilities towards my family, and I am suffering from a chronic illness and cannot do heavy work, and the Muslims are in need of someone who can specialize in ruqyah and call them to Tawheed and forbid them from shirk? If it is permissible to open a Qur’aanic clinic, then after that I find a job, there are further questions to be answered: 1- Should I stop doing ruqyah and take this job even though this would result in several negative consequences such as not being able to do this good deed and this will create a vacuum in this area? 2- Should I combine both and try to reconcile between them without letting one of them affect the other? 3- Should I refuse to work and be content with doing ruqyah because it benefits others and serves the interests of the Muslims? If it is not permissible to open a Qur’aanic clinic: 1- Should I stop doing ruqyah altogether? 2- Is it better to carry on doing ruqyah in my house and not specialize in it, and put up with people’s annoyances?.

We heard that some of those who use the Qur’aan for treatment – by reading Qur’aan and du’aa’s prescribed in sharee’ah over water or perfumed oil for the treatment of sihr (witchcraft), the evil eye and the touch of the Shaytaan (madness) – take payment for doing that. We are a conservative family who love Islam, and we do whatever we can of righteous deeds, but we suffer from some problems and do not always get along, and we have a lot of troubles. I have not been to see a raqi (one who does ruqyah) because I hope to enter Paradise among the seventy thousand who did not seek ruqyah. I tried to read Soorat al-Baqarah every day for forty days, but I could not do it. I tried several times, but every time I tried, I would see frightening dreams. And if I listen to the Quran for healing? Like, for example, if I listen to Surah Al-Baqarah daily, for my healing, as Ruqyah, as I am afflicted with Sihr (magic) and possessed by jinn?
